Abstract

|
Shigella sonnei, is the most frequent cause of shigellosis in Kangwon province. Drug resistance, restriction enzyme digestion pattern, ribotype of this organism, isolated in Kangweon province, were studied. 21 isolates from all outbreaks have identical antibiotic susceptibility, plasmid profile, ribotype. Considering that the incidence of
sonnei infection rapidly increased after 1992, that the plasmid profile and drug resistance are particularly sensitive to environmental or antibiotic pressure, that the ribotype itself doesn´t change rapidly, it is likely that recently a single clone of Shigella sonnei had spread in Kangwon province .
